I found this wheel at an antique mall in Victoria. It will take a bit of repair work, but I think its worth the effort. The mother-of-all is mounted between two heavy pieces of leather. It is still in Victoria at my son's home, so work will depend on travel. If you have any experience with a similar wheel, I would love to hear from you. A bit of advice and encouragement would be greatly appreciated. This Lendrum wheel was my very first and it is my favourite. Its great to use and it folds flat for travelling.
This wheel is on semi-permanent loan from dyer-friend, Sandy. We are still learning how to use it. The heel-toe motion is somehow difficult for me to master. Sandy called it an "Indian Wheel." A visitor to this site said that she learned to spin on this wheel from a Cowichan friend. It is used to spin those thick yarns used in our wonderful bulky Cowichan sweaters.
Spindles like these are used by silk and cotton spinners in Oaxaca. More information is available on "A Weaver's Tour of Oaxaca"

I purchased this wheel recently at a lawn sale. The woman who sold it said that it was her mother's wheel and that she had purchased it from the maker on Saltspring Island about 20 years ago. It's a wonderful wheel and I'd like to know more about it. Other views of the wheel are on the "Queries" page. |
