This rag shuttle was the first piece of equipment I made using my new wood-working tools. Perhaps one of the things I love most about weaving is the beauty of the tools. The collection of spacers, below, show that even the simplest items are beautiful because of the well-selected wood
Three indispensible tools: A fringe-twister which I purchased at the ANWG conference in Victoria, a heavy wooden crochet hook, found by my sister in a charity shop in Mamaroneck, NY., and a strange little tool called a fast-knitter which my mother found in a drawer she had not opened since the forties. The last two items are used to create crocheted bindings on handwovens.
I also collect useful old household equipment and which often find their way into the fibre process. The washboard is used in felting and the laundry tongs to lift skeins and fleece out of dyebaths. The ceramic apple-baker contains felt buttons for use on handwoven clothing. I found this umbrella swift at our local antique market. It was labelled " sock-dryer"
